Villa midfielder Steve Sidwell will return after suspension and is included in the squad to face former club Chelsea in the Barclays Premier League encounter at Villa Park.
Sidwell was banned for the midweek UEFA Cup meeting with CSKA Moscow after being sent off against Hamburg before Christmas.
Striker Emile Heskey and winger James Milner are battling to recover from Achilles and thigh problems respectively. Skipper Martin Laursen, Carlos Cuellar, Wilfred Bouma and Nigel Reo-Coker are still ruled out.
Chelsea defender Ashley Cole misses out through suspension.
Paulo Ferreira looks set to deputise for Cole but centre backs Alex (ankle) and Ricardo Carvalho (hamstring) are doubtful.
Should neither be available, Branislav Ivanovic or Michael Mancienne is likely to figure alongside John Terry, who is back from suspension.
Joe Cole is out for the season with knee ligament damage while Michael Essien is due back next month after recovering from a similar injury.
